Are you see holes in the wooden beams around your home? Learn how to identify and eliminate drywood termites from your home....
Common pantry pests, Indian meal moths, are often found in homes, restaurants, grocery stores, food storage facilities, and any other place where there is stored food. Adult Indian meal moths are easy to identify because of the unique color pattern found on their wings. The front half of their wings are brown or cream-colored. The back half of their wings are a darker bronze-like color. From wing tip to wing tip, adults measure from ⅝” to ¾”. Their larvae are about 1/2 inch long, they have a brown head, and a pinkish, yellowish, or greenish body.
Feeding on dry goods like cornmeal, grains, cereals, seeds, chocolate, birdseed, and dry pet food, Indian meal moth larvae are found living inside of the food they are feeding on, typically in kitchen and pantry areas. Adults are most active around dusk and are attracted to lights. If they are in your home, they rest on walls, ceilings, or around the television or lighting fixtures. Adult Indian meal moths do not feed, it is the larvae that feed on dry goods and are problematic to stored-food products.
Indian meal moths are most often introduced into homes in the larval or egg stage through food purchased from the store that is already infested with these pantry pests. Adults sometimes find their way into homes through openings around windows and doors after being attracted by outdoor lighting fixtures.
Not all ants are dangerous. In fact, several are annoying but pose no significant threat to health or property. Some exceptions are fire ants (their sting packs a powerful punch), Pharaoh ants (dangers associated with these pests are mentioned above), and carpenter ants (they’re not dangerous to people but they will damage homes and businesses).
Indian meal moths are not dangerous pests, but they do contaminate food, so they need to be kept out of your home. Adults lay their eggs in food sources that develop into larvae. The larvae then feed on the stored-food product, contaminating it with their excrement and saliva.
