How To Keep Bed Bugs Out This Fall

10/12/2018

Now that it is fall, you would assume that most pests that are active during the warmer weather would die off. While that is true for most of them, some insects—such as bed bugs—are indoor pests, and will thrive throughout fall and winter because of your comfortable home temperatures.

A common myth is that bed bugs are only a summer pest, and while they may be more active during the summer, they are still active during fall and winter as well, due to their habits of hitchhiking their way into our homes. Additionally, if you have children in school, it is incredibly likely that they will come into contact with a child who has a bed bug infestation back at home. Because of this, it’s not surprising that your child may bring bed bugs home from school with them on their person.

These facts may make your situation appear bleak, but there are a few steps you can take to prevent them from getting into your home in the first place.

  • Check your child’s clothing, bags, and hair for any sign of bed bugs—including bed bugs themselves and their tiny white eggs.
  • Try not to buy second-hand furniture unless you are positive that you can inspect it carefully. If you end up purchasing used furniture, take time to look for bed bugs in fabric pockets, stuffing, and cushions before bringing it into your home.
  • If you know you are going to be traveling, make sure the hotels you decide to stay at have not reported a recent bed bug infestation, and check your hotel rooms for signs of these insects in carpeting, sheets, and pillows.
  • When arriving home after traveling, wash and dr all your clothing on high heat, and be cautious when bringing your belongings inside—especially if they have been touching floors or carpeting in public areas.
